Ophthalmology treatment for those patients who need it, both clinical diagnosis and surgery.
One of the most common eye complaints, resulting in reversible blindness, are cataracts. With surgery sight can be completely restored to the patient.
In April 2018, the association Idiwaki, in collaboration with the organization Africa Direct, began to carry out eye health campaigns in the Centro de Soins Notre Dame de la Sant’e en Batseng’la ,Camerun. In these campaigns groups of volunteers, health professionals, travel to the area to offer ophthalmological treatment to those in need. In each of these campaigns approximately three hundred patients will have a medical appointment and diagnosis while 20 to 25 will also undergo surgery.
One of the main causes of reversible blindness are cataracts. The main objective of the campaigns is to operate on those suffering from this complaint. It is an outpatient surgery, of half an hour’s duration. During the procedure the cataract is removed and a transparent, permanent, intraocular lens is inserted restoring sight to the patient in a matter of hours or days, once recovered from the surgery.
However, it is a costly procedure involving much expense. Thanks to donations the operating theatre is well equipped but each operation costs around 100 euros, this includes disposable material and the intraocular lens.
We are asking for help to finance these surgeries. Every 100 euros means one more patient will have the operation. One patient who will regain independence and quality of life, who will see once again, with all that it means.
