The Padre Pío health centre is situated in the district of Kamwenge in the South east of Uganda. It has a population of nearly 400,000 people. 95% of the population live in the country,55% are women and 83% of the economy subsists on agricultural income.
The Health Centre Padre Pío was opened at the end of 2011, constructed by “Africa Direct” through their local counterpart . Before this only a small medical dispensary was in existence, insufficient to cope with the needs of the population of Kamwenge. The local counterpart of Africa Direct has been working towards improving the level of health and longevity in Kamwenge for over ten years. They also manage the health services.
Africa Direct support the centre annually with different schemes, not only aimed at facilitating access to medical services for the disadvantaged but also to improving the existing service.
One of the most important requirements of the Centre this year is an electric bisturí for surgery.
